A Business Improvement District (BID) is a defined geographic area where property owners collectively invest in the success and vitality of their neighborhood. Through a special assessment, those funds are reinvested directly into programs, services, and improvements that go above and beyond traditional municipal services.

For the Springfield Business Improvement District, that means having an organization dedicated specifically to Downtown Springfield—working every day to make it cleaner, safer, more active, welcoming, and economically vibrant.

The BID serves as both a resource and an advocate for downtown stakeholders, supporting businesses and property owners while investing in the overall downtown experience. Our work includes street cleaning and beautification, business support and economic development, marketing and promotion, events and programming, placemaking, public-space improvements, and advocacy for the issues that impact downtown.

Simply put, the BID brings downtown stakeholders together around a shared investment in the place we all want to see succeed.

Every dollar, program, partnership, and initiative is focused on one goal: building a stronger Downtown Springfield.

At the Springfield Business Improvement District, we work every day to make Downtown Springfield a cleaner, safer, more vibrant, and more welcoming place to do business, live, work, and visit. Our work goes beyond events and marketing—we’re on the ground supporting businesses, improving the public realm, advocating for downtown stakeholders, and creating experiences that bring people into the heart of the city.

Our key initiatives include:

• Clean & Safe: Our Street Team provides a visible, hands-on presence throughout the district, helping keep downtown clean, cared for, and welcoming. From litter removal and sidewalk maintenance to addressing quality-of-life concerns and assisting businesses, property owners, residents, and visitors, our team is out in the district every day helping Downtown Springfield put its best foot forward.
• Economic Development: A strong downtown starts with strong businesses and active storefronts. Through initiatives like Lease It Local Springfield, we work to reduce vacancies, activate ground-floor commercial spaces, and attract businesses that contribute to a vibrant downtown. We also connect businesses with technical assistance, marketing support, resources, partnerships, and opportunities that help them establish themselves and grow.
• Advocacy & Stakeholder Support: We serve as a voice and resource for the businesses, property owners, organizations, residents, and institutions that make up Downtown Springfield. We advocate for policies, investments, infrastructure, and projects that support economic growth and strengthen downtown, while helping stakeholders navigate challenges and connect with the right partners and resources.
• Public Space Enhancements & Placemaking: The spaces between our buildings matter just as much as what happens inside them. We invest in beautification, landscaping, streetscape improvements, public art, seasonal décor, and creative placemaking projects that make downtown more inviting and memorable. Our goal is to transform everyday spaces into places people want to spend time.
• Marketing & Promotion: We tell Downtown Springfield’s story. Through social media, digital marketing, public relations, campaigns, partnerships, and storytelling, we showcase downtown businesses, events, attractions, people, and experiences while giving our stakeholders a larger platform to reach residents and visitors throughout the region.
• Community Engagement & Partnerships: Downtown belongs to everyone. We bring together businesses, residents, cultural organizations, major institutions, community partners, and city leaders to collaborate, share ideas, and create opportunities that strengthen connections to downtown. These partnerships help build a stronger sense of place—and greater pride in Springfield.
• Events & Programming: We create reasons to experience downtown. From major festivals and seasonal celebrations to markets, wellness programming, arts initiatives, and smaller pop-up experiences, our events activate public spaces and showcase the people and businesses that give Springfield its character. Programs like Worthy BrewFest, the Downtown Springfield Farmers Market, Yoga on the Landing, Harvest Fest, and holiday programming bring thousands of people together while supporting the downtown economy.

Ultimately, our job is to make Downtown Springfield work better... for the people who invest here, operate businesses here, work here, live here, and choose to spend their time here. We’re not simply promoting downtown; we’re actively working to shape its future.
