Dr. Seuss Birthday Party!

March 2 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

It’s back! Join us on March 2 to celebrate beloved children’s author and Springfield native Theodor “Ted” Geisel–aka Dr. Seuss–on his 115th birthday. This action-packed day features Seuss-inspired cakes and decorations, a dance party, art and science activities and meet a greets with familiar faces. Free with museum admission!

Activities include:
Author Tish Rabe, 10:30 am-2:30 pm
Meet the author behind the titles in The Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library. Tish has also written books for Sesame Street, Blues’ Clues, Disney, and many more. Kids 12 and under get a free copy of her book Night Lights (while supplies last). Additional books available for purchase in the Museum Store.

The Cat in the Hat and Friends, 11 am-1 pm, 2-4 pm
The Cat, Thing 1 and Thing 2, the Grinch and the Lorax are here to celebrate their creator’s special day. Get a hug or a high five and snap a selfie with your favorite character.

If I Ran the Zoo, Noon-3 pm
Meet from our friends from Forest Park Zoo! Theodor Robert Geisel (Dr. Seuss’s dad) was superintendent of Forest Park Zoo and his work inspired many of Dr. Seuss’s wild characters! Get up close and personal with some birds, mammals, and reptiles.

Karaoke and Dance Party, 11 am-3 pm
DJ Marty invites you to bust a move in your dancing shoes and maybe even belt out a tune of your own.

Building Seussville, 11 am-4 pm
Join our construction team and use recycled materials–paper towel tubes, boxes, cups and more–to create a whimsical city inspired by Whoville, the castle in Oh, the Places You’ll Go and other wacky locations in Dr. Seuss’s books. Add your own architecture style to this group project!

We All Need Trees, 11 am-4 pm
You might be surprised to learn how many different products we get from trees! You’ll get to examine various products and determine which ones are made from trees, and then brainstorm ideas on how these can be conserved.

One Fold, Two Fold, 11 am-4 pm
Many objects in the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum depict fish! Go on a scavenger hunt to find different kinds of fish in the museum galleries and then make an origami fish to take home.

Mount Crumpit Derby, 11 am-4 pm
Use all of your STEAM skills to design a mini-sleigh to race down our mini-mountain and see who can bring the Grinch down to Whoville the fastest!

Dr. Seuss Cakes and Decorations, 11 am-4 pm
See real cakes and alternative creations throughout the galleries in every museum.

Digital Dr. Seuss, 11 am-4 pm
Read and explore short stories from our favorite author digitally on the museum’s tablets. While batteries last.

Dr. Seuss Photo Booth, 11 am-4 pm
Grab a Seussian prop to take some fun and memorable family photos.

Seuss Trivia, 11 am-4 pm
Spin the big wheel, answer a trivia question, and win a prize! Questions are appropriate for all ages.

Seuss Puppet Theaters, 11 am-4 pm
Create your own performance with our Seuss shadow puppet and finger puppet theaters.

Family Science Adventures, 11 am-2 pm
Explore the Science Museum and find the Roving Scientist. You never know what kind of demonstrations and hands-on activities they have in store for you!

Art Discovery Center, noon-4 pm
Trace Chinese characters, try on costumes, play gallery games, peek under lift-up panels on the Wall of Symbols to discover the meaning behind Asian motifs, put on a puppet show, and make an art project.
