SUMMARY:Annie Lowrey “The Time Tax: How the Government Wastes Our Time—and How to Fix It”
DESCRIPTION:A powerful investigation into American bureaucracy\, how it wastes our time and drives inequality\, and how we can make paperwork work for us \nNobody likes doing paperwork\, and Americans do a lot of it. Filing your taxes and getting a driver’s license is bad enough. Negotiating with your doctor and insurer or getting out of a rental contract is worse. And accessing disaster assistance\, unemployment\, disability\, or Medicaid can be a nightmare\, the stakes life-or-death. If time is money\, the hoops we jump through to comply with the rules are one more bill we as citizens are forced to pay\, and an extortionate one. \nJournalist Annie Lowrey has termed this the “time tax”: the paperwork\, aggravation\, and mental effort imposed on citizens when they access the rights and benefits that are supposed to be theirs. How did the world’s wealthiest country end up with such a convoluted\, punitive\, and inept system of public administration and so much fine print larding up everyday life? Lowrey traces a pathbreaking history of administrative burdens in the United States from the colonial era to today\, revealing how they were historically a tool of discrimination. And she examines the contemporary effect of time taxes on the public\, from how they entrench poverty to how they reduce trust in government. \nLowrey diagnoses the problem and gives this miserable experience a name—and she shows that it doesn’t have to be this way. Other countries have made cutting red tape a priority. There’s no reason we can’t do the same. The Time Tax will enrage you\, enlighten you\, and\, most important\, provide a point-by-point guide for reclaiming your precious time

SUMMARY:Jessica Tarlov “I Disagree: Winning Arguments Without Losing Friends”
DESCRIPTION:The outspoken liberal voice on the Fox News show The Five shows us how to stay true to our values\, find common ground\, and communicate with confidence when engaging across political and social divides. \nImagine you’re sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner\, knowing it’s going to get heated. One uncle is ready to argue about politics\, another relative has very different views\, and you usually try to stay out of it\, even though you have strong opinions yourself. Conversations like these have split some families up. Now imagine that dinner table debate broadcast daily to millions. \nWelcome to the world of Jessica Tarlov\, an unflappable liberal voice on Fox News Channel’s The Five. When you’re outnumbered four to one on a daily basis\, you better know your stuff. When you’re outnumbered four to one on the highest-rated show on cable news\, you better have your beliefs on lockdown. \nIn the conservative fishbowl of The Five\, Tarlov is no stranger to navigating thorny\, often contentious debates with poise\, authenticity\, and conviction. In this riveting guide\, Jessica Tarlov shows us how she does it. Because at some point or other\, we all face disagreements—whether with colleagues\, family\, or friends—and want to walk away with both our values and our relationships intact. \nTarlov models an important and accessible route to building bravery for these conversations. She demonstrates that navigating contentious situations is a skill that requires radical honesty\, knowing how to engage with numbers and statistics\, understanding when to listen and when to talk\, and articulating the common threads that unite us all. Tarlov has honed these skills with practice\, and here\, she reveals her tools of the trade for the first time. She also explores the future of coalition building\, the policies that will animate voters\, and a politics we can all feel better about. \nWhether you find yourself at a charged debate with the in-laws\, or in a tricky conversation with your boss\, Jessica Tarlov will prepare you to stand up for what you believe in\, even if it means standing alone—and why standing alone doesn’t mean standing apart.

SUMMARY:Ray LaMontagne - Trouble 20th Anniversary Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join Ray LaMontagne on the Trouble 20th Anniversary Tour. \nRay’s vast catalog spans nine full length records\, chart topping radio singles\, and a Grammy win\, in addition to multiple Grammy nominations. This year will prove to be an exciting one for LaMontagne as he heads out on the road celebrating his first full length album\, Trouble\, playing the album in its entirety as well as songs from across his catalog. \nOf this landmark anniversary\, LaMontagne has written the following personal note to his fans: \nAs many of you know\, last September was the 20th anniversary of the release of Trouble. Twenty years. Two Decades. That’s a lot of water under the bridge. Every cell in my body has changed three times over in that time. I have been three times reborn. \nThere are moments in your life when you need to place a marker. Some people think that it is brave\, or fearless\, to never look back. I don’t believe that. For the simple reason that if you never look back you will never see how far you have come. This year I place a sign post: twenty years of Trouble. \nWhen Trouble was initially released Vinyl was considered a dead format\, never to breathe again \nDigital audio was the new King. As we know this has proved untrue. Each year more and more music lovers are listening to Vinyl and appreciating it for its depth and breadth of sound\, for its physical heft\, for its tangible realness. Over the past few months Brian Lee and Bob Jackson at Waygate Mastering have remastered the album for the first time specifically for Vinyl. And I have to say\, it sounds incredible. They have managed to bring out subtleties in the vocals\, the instrumentation\, that were somehow lost previously. It sounds as if a sonic veil has been lifted. I cannot thank them enough. \nTo further honor this moment I will be hitting the road later this summer for the Trouble 20th Anniversary Tour\, playing the album top to tail for the first time since it was released. I hope you will come out and join me and my friends and help us celebrate this moment in time. It wouldn’t be the same without you.

SUMMARY:Jill Lepore “The Rise and Fall of the Artificial State“
DESCRIPTION:“The Artificial State is the factory farming of humans\, the sorting and segmenting\, the isolation and alienation\, as if humans were becoming to machines what animals had become to humans.” —Jill Lepore \n“Much in history is headlong but few grand transformations have been more precipitate or more heedless than the rise of . . . the Artificial State\,” writes Jill Lepore in this passionate account of how rule by machine has ravaged the world. Inspired by Hannah Arendt’s The Origins of Totalitarianism\, which argued in 1951 that the machinery of modern life was reshaping the very fundamentals of human existence\, Lepore\, profoundly disturbed by the technology revolution and by the soulless inundation of artificial intelligence\, unfurls a new history for our own twenty-first century. \nBuilding on an essay in The New Yorker in 2024\, Lepore’s clarion call traces our increasing dependence on and strangulation by data. Political campaigns\, awash in an avalanche of fake bots\, have been reduced to attention-mining algorithms\, while multinational media corporations dictate public discourse\, and the era of the liberal nation-state seems to be coming to a rapid end\, replaced by billionaire technocrats reliant on autocracy and the tools of AI. \nWith Orwellian overtones\, The Rise and Fall of the Artificial State demonstrates how technology has corroded global democracy\, leading to the destruction of both human community and capacity for self-government\, creating a new form of AI government\, a digital citizen’s assembly\, where AI will recommend the course of action to humans in place of human-run legislatures. Especially sobering with this proliferation of “dizzying\, ever-changing schemes\, prophesies\, and predictions” is that the Artificial State has come at the expense of the natural world\, leading to catastrophic loss of wildlife habitat and biodiversity. \nDeliberately alarming\, The Rise and Fall of the Artificial State\, despite its abundance of dire facts\, is not a funeral dirge; rather\, it’s an inspiring wake-up call\, written in Lepore’s typically elegiac prose\, which demonstrates that nothing about the Artificial State was inevitable\, for it is a “government without consent\, even government without humans.” It can\, Lepore asserts\, be dismantled. Other heinous systems\, like feudalism\, fascism\, and slavery\, have also been dismantled\, but disassembly requires identifying the parts\, tracing the sources. It requires telling a new history. This is the purpose of The Rise and Fall of the Artificial State. \nJill Lepore is the David Woods Kemper ’41 Professor of American History at Harvard University\, professor of law at Harvard Law School\, and a staff writer at The New Yorker. Her many books include the New York Times bestsellers These Truths and We the People.

SUMMARY:Brad Williams: The Tall Tales Tour
DESCRIPTION:One of the most in-demand comedians working today\, Brad has appeared on “The Tonight Show\,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live\,” and in the films “Little Evil\,” “Mascots\,” and “Reno 911: It’s A Wonderful Heist.” \nHis first one-hour special\, “Fun Size\,” was the highest rated special on Showtime. His second\, “Daddy Issues\,” prompted The New York Times to write “No one is doing stand-up comedy more hilariously than Brad Williams.” \nHis other special on Netflix “The Degenerates\,” garnered huge ratings and rave reviews. \nRecently\, he became the first comedian in the history of Cirque du Soleil to headline and sell out their newest show\, “Mad Apple\,” in a brand new 1200 seat theater at the New York New York Hotel in Las Vegas. \nThis year he has continued to sell out (and add multiple shows of) every size of venue on his calendar at mock speed. \nNo wonder the late Robin Williams called him “Prozac with a head.”

SUMMARY:Age of Revolutions: Progress and Backlash from 1600 to the Present with Fareed Zakaria
DESCRIPTION:The CNN host and best-selling author will discuss the revolutions―past and present―that define the polarized and unstable age in which we live. \nPopulist rage\, ideological fracture\, economic and technological shocks\, war\, and an international system studded with catastrophic risk―the early decades of the twenty-first century may be the most revolutionary period in modern history. But it is not the first. Humans have lived\, and thrived\, through more than one great realignment. What are these revolutions\, and how can they help us to understand our fraught world? \nFareed Zakaria masterfully investigated the eras and movements that have shaken norms while shaping the modern world. Three such periods hold profound lessons for today. First\, in the seventeenth-century Netherlands\, a fascinating series of transformations made that tiny land the richest in the world—and created politics as we know it today. Next\, the French Revolution\, an explosive era that devoured its ideological children and left a bloody legacy that haunts us today. Finally\, the mother of all revolutions\, the Industrial Revolution\, which catapulted Great Britain and the US to global dominance and created the modern world. \nAlongside these paradigm-shifting historical events\, Zakaria probes four present-day revolutions: globalization\, technology\, identity\, and geopolitics. For all their benefits\, the globalization and technology revolutions have produced profound disruptions and pervasive anxiety and our identity. And increasingly\, identity is the battlefield on which the twenty-first century’s polarized politics are fought. All this is set against a geopolitical revolution as great as the one that catapulted the United States to world power in the late nineteenth century. Now we are entering a world in which the US is no longer the dominant power. As we find ourselves at the nexus of four seismic revolutions\, we can easily imagine a dark future. But Zakaria proves that pessimism is premature. If we act wisely\, the liberal international order can be revived and populism relegated to the ash heap of history. \nSigned copies of Mr. Zakaria’s book will be available for pre-purchase for $20 on October 28\, 2025.
